The Scotch Malt Whisky Society is the world’s foremost whisky club and the world’s leading Independent Bottler of Cask Strength Single Barrel Whiskies.
The whiskies are bottled just as they were casked many years ago, with no dilution and are non-chill filtration. These rare and unique bottlings have been chosen by the Society’s esteemed panel of whisky experts; and are bottled only when they feel the whisky is ready. Some of the casks hold as few as 15 bottles while a full Gorda Cask may hold more than 750. This being said no matter how many bottles there are it is a rare and finite number and when they’re gone, they’re gone forever.
Founded in 1983 The Society now boasts in excess of 27,000 members worldwide and bottles about 300 casks per year. Although only Society Members are able to buy The Society bottlings from approved retailers, members and non-members alike are able to purchase, sample and enjoy these rare and unique drams in The Scotch Malt Whisky Society Partner Bars scattered sporadically throughout the world.
The distilleries aren’t named, but are identified by The Society’s mysterious coding system. Don’t be surprised that your favorite distillery’s distinct flavour profile doesn’t shine through in a Society bottling, that’s the fun of Cask Strength Single Barrel bottlings. The tasting notes are as unique as the whisky itself. Let your mind guide you through the story, and lead you to your whisky, there are hints along the way as to where it originated, but the fun is in the exploration.
On October 21st 2013, Fets Whisky Kitchen became The Society’s 19th Partner Bar in the world.
The Society’s Global Ambassador Georgie Bell was here with us for the launch sharing her knowledge and the history of the Scotch Malt Whisky Society with our guests. Along with Georgie, the founders of the Canadian chapter of the Society; Kelly and Rob Carpenter were also in attendance.
We have now partnered with local liquor retailer, Legacy Liquor Store and they are now the local retailer for the Scotch Malt Whisky Society. Legacy is only allowed to sell Society bottlings to Society members but here at The Kitchen everyone is able to sample the unique and wonderful whiskies from this Mysterious Society.
Each month Legacy will host the monthly outturn where 7 Society bottles will be sampled each month before they go on sale. Eric and Allura will present the monthly outturns at Legacy, where everyone gets to enjoy the wonders these rare and precious bottles hold.
